Doing Less, Differently

The family called asking for an intervention. Their adult daughter was drinking destructively, refusing every conversation about it, and the family had reached the point families reach: something dramatic had to happen, because nothing else had worked. They had seen how interventions look on television. They wanted one, soon.

The independent assessment of the situation pointed the other way. The daughter's refusal was not denial in the simple sense; it was, in significant part, a response to the family's pattern, years of escalating confrontations, each one ending in an ultimatum no one enforced. One more confrontation, staged and formalized, was likely to be experienced as the same move at higher volume, and it risked closing the one door that remained partly open: her relationship with her younger brother, the only member of the family she still spoke to freely.

The advisory recommendation was to do less, differently. No intervention. Instead: the family stopped funding the apartment that made the situation viable, calmly and with notice, as a decision rather than a punishment. The brother was prepared, carefully, for the conversations only he could have. And the family agreed on exactly what they would do when she reached out, so that the moment would not be improvised.

It took four months. When she asked for help, the plan was already built, and she entered treatment at a level of care matched to her actual situation, not to the family's panic.

An advisor paid to conduct interventions would have conducted one. Independence is the freedom to conclude that the dramatic option is the wrong one, and to be believed when saying so.
